A larger number of people is being involved in logging into massive open online courses (MOOCs) and following courses of their interest for free from the top universities worldwide. This is just one way of the distance learning manner of reshaping the way institutions offer learning services.

Michael B. Horn, Co-founder and Executive Director of Innosight Institute, specializes in disruption of online education and on November 8, 2012 has had his presentation at Educause 2012 conference in Denver. The Education Dive audience was able to hear his talk about the changes that are currently underway in the new models in higher education. Horn did not stop at higher ed and he also address how MOOCs will influence high schools.

The truth about argumentation

Argumentation is commonly associated with debate and its using does not require being adversarial. When trying to persuade, your first thought might be to avoid it.

The kind of argument being discussed here is not bickering or being obnoxious or even debate, therefore do not think of it as attacking the opposing point of view. In its simplest form, it is putting forth reasons for or against a certain point of view.

Argumentation can involve deductive reasoning, presentation and elaboration. It starts with a proposition, followed by an expression of a point of view on a subject and then supporting an evidence. The last one is added as principles to support the proposition used. Reasoning on the matter, applying inductions and deductions to the proposed thought are part of the argumentation.

How do MOOCs work?

The main characteristics of the MOOC can be categorized in the following manner: – informal setting learning via Internet for free or low fees – all materials presented can be shared by everyone, whenever needed – variety of assignments to be chosen from all professional disciplines – no enrollmentĀ needed, self-discipline is a key to successful learning – no language barriers considering the online translation tools – development of digital skills and networking. MOOCsĀ are present at edX, the nonprofit start-up from Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that recorded 370,000 studentsĀ its first official courses this fall.

Coursera has reached more than 1.7 million and is less than 2 years in use MOOCs have been online for a few years as collaborative technical learning events, but this is the year when everyone wants in. Top universities are partnering with Coursera at a furious pace. It now offers courses from 33 of the biggest names in post-secondary education, including Princeton, Brown, Columbia and Duke. Google unleashed a MOOC-building online tool, and Stanford unveiledĀ Class2GoĀ with two courses.

Traditional online courses can charge tuition, carry credit and limit enrollment to a few dozen to ensure interaction with instructors, whereas MOOCs Ā are generally free, credit-less, solid and massive. Anyone with an Internet connectionĀ can enroll and the faculty can’t possibly respond to students’ individually. Classmates may count on one another in study groups organized in their towns, in online forumsĀ or for grading work.
