A lot of people jump in at the deep end when it comes to learning. They realise what they need to learn, pay for a course and get started straight away. The reality is that you need to take a step back and figure out exactly how you are going to absorb the most information.
The first thing to consider is the time of day that you are going to study. If you are planning to study after a 7 hour shift at work or after driving for 4 hours, your brain is not going to be in the right shape.
What you need to do is pick a time of the day or week when your brain is going to be fresh. If your brain is fresh and ready to learn, you are going to be able to absorb a lot more information.
You’ll need to organise your studying into sessions. Most people find that after around 15-20 minutes they start to lose their concentration. They might end up only absorbing around 50% of the information they were when they originally started.
Taking just a 5 minute break could make all the difference when it comes to studying. Go for a walk, grab a drink or read a few pages of a magazine; allow your mind to cut off and recuperate.
Workload and priority
When studying you will need to work in priority order; this will help with stress. If you finish all the parts of studying that you enjoy then your motivation is going to drop like a stone. You’ll also be worried that you won’t have covered all the points that you really need to know.
Before you start to study make sure that you have gotten rid of all the distractions surrounding you. This includes things such as turning off instant messengers, mobile phones and TV – music can sometimes help people when it comes to studying. Make a clean work space and that will allow you to function much better.
The right workspace
Battling through study time can be difficult. University students might have spend hours at University already and employees a full day at work. You need to create an environment where your brain registers that it is time to work. If you have a space in a room or a spare room, try and convert it into a mini office. If there is a desk around then make sure you use that.
You can make your surroundings bright and colourful which will certainly help with your mindset when you are working. This includes putting up pictures and using display border rolls. Creating a working environment that you feel comfortable in is really going to help increase your productivity. It will also mean that when you take 5 minute breaks, you don’t stay in the same place – your office becomes a place for work only.
