6 tools you may need in higher education

If you’re getting ready to go off to college, you’ve probably thought about what you should bring.

You might even have a packing list already. Before you consider you list complete, though, take a look at these six things that you may need – you might find out your list isn’t quite complete after all.

Voice recorder

Notebooks and pens are necessary for taking notes, but have you thought about buying a voice recorder? These are great for auditory learners. If you have trouble finding a good one at the store, try buying one online. You can get almost everything on the internet, from bedding to compound microscopes for students. You can download and application for your mobile and use it as a recorder.

Graphing calculator

Your math class might not require a graphing calculator, or it might be optional. Get one anyway. You’ll probably need one at some point in your college career, so make your life easier – get one now.

Planner

Between classes, clubs, religious activities, volunteering, and trying to hold down a part-time job, college can be a busy time. Don’t try to keep track of everything in your head. You’ll slip up eventually, and it only takes one missed class to get behind.

Thumb drive

If you’re bringing a laptop to college, you might not be planning on bringing a thumb drive. Why would you need one, right? Laptops are portable, but that doesn’t mean a thumb drive won’t be useful. They’re great for backing up work and for working on group projects.

Power strip

You’re probably going to be sharing a room with one or two other people if you’re planning on living in a dorm room. Charging laptops, cell phones, music players, and other electronics at the same time may not be feasible unless someone in your dorm room brings a power strip.

Toilet paper

If you’re sharing a semi-private bathroom instead of using one shared by the whole floor, you might need to buy toilet paper. While this depends on the college, it’s always best to come prepared with an extra role. Nothing’s worse than going to the bathroom and realizing the holder is empty.

It’s hard to try to think of everything you’ll need for the whole year, especially if you’re used to living with adults who provide many things for you. Try to plan ahead, but don’t get too stressed about it. If you forget something, you can always buy it later.
