Becoming a proficient writer in 4 steps

It is a fact, that all of us are not born with the ability to write beautifully. But, of course we all dream that people also hang on to our words like they do to major authors’ words.

If you have always wanted to be Hemingway or Charlotte Bronte or maybe Grisham, or even if you want to write better college essays, then this guide is the best way to start your journey to become a proficient writer, who has the power to use words to enthrall the audience. Read these four easy and practical steps, and become proficient writers!

1. Read the works of great writers.

Reading the works of great authors helps you to understand how to construct sentences and formulate stories. It also gives you a chance to analyze the works of these authors and gives you a glimpse into their skills and style of writing. Of course, you are not supposed to copy their style, but this is the best way to learn from some of the masters themselves.
Also, make a habit of reading newspapers, short stories and academic articles. This will enhance your knowledge and help you to become a diverse writer with knowledge on many topics.

2. Jot down ideas, all the time!

The dreaded writer’s block can creep up on any writer at any time! It will happen to you too, your mind will go blank, unable to formulate new ideas. You can neither predict nor stop this, but to remedy the situation you can write down ideas on a small diary whenever you come up with any new idea. So, whenever you are going through a dry spell, you can open up this book and use any of those ideas.

3. Enrich your vocabulary by using a dictionary!

If you want to write on diverse topics, the main requirement for this is that your vocabulary should be vast. Moreover, when your vocabulary will be vast you will have more choices of words to choose from and you will be able to express your thoughts in a more meaningful manner. Try to read a dictionary or a thesaurus to learn new words. You can also look for synonyms of words that you already know.
The right vocabulary can make your writing shine and more meaningful, so try to learn new words and as many synonyms as you can via exercises, flash cards or a simple dictionary.

4. Proofread your work, always!

The most important point that many writers forget, is that they do not proofread their work. Even when they have written beautifully, small grammatical or spelling errors leave a sour taste to their writing. So, make sure whatever you are writing when you have finished writing, make a habit of proofreading it. This will ensure that your piece is absolutely error free.

Remember that the key is not to give up! This will take practice, so don’t get frustrated mid process, rather preserver and practice. You shall become a proficient writer in no time!
