Why AI tutors should give students hints before answers?

There is a moment almost every student knows.

You have been staring at the same Maths problem for five minutes. You know the chapter. You recognise the formula. You even have a vague idea of what the first step should be, but nothing is moving.

Then you open an AI tool and type:

“Solve this question.”

Seconds later, the complete solution appears.

The immediate problem is gone. But something else may have disappeared with it: the opportunity to figure out the part you were actually stuck on.

This is one of the challenges AI tutors need to solve. Being able to generate an answer is useful, but a good tutor should also know when not to give that answer immediately.

Sometimes, one well-timed hint can teach more than a complete solution.

The fastest answer is not always the most useful one

Most generative AI systems are designed to be helpful. Ask a question and they try to answer it.

For learning, however, helpfulness is more complicated.

Imagine two students struggling with the same algebra problem.

The first receives the entire solution:

“Here are the steps and the final answer.”

The second receives:

“Look at the two sides of the equation. What could you do first to isolate the variable?”

The first student can immediately see how the problem is solved.

The second student still has to think.

That extra effort can feel less convenient, but it is often exactly what learning requires.

Students eventually need to recognise a problem, choose an approach and work through it independently. If AI repeatedly performs those steps for them, completing homework can become easier without necessarily making the student better prepared for the next question.

 

A hint keeps the student inside the problem

The useful thing about a good hint is that it does not end the problem.

It gives the learner enough information to continue.

Suppose a student is solving a Physics numerical and has selected the correct formula but keeps getting the wrong answer.

A full AI-generated solution might redo the entire question from the beginning.

A more useful response could be:

“Your formula is correct. Check whether all the values are using compatible units before substituting them.”

Now the student knows where to look, but they still have to identify the mistake and correct it.

This distinction matters.

The AI is not simply showing what the right reasoning looks like. It is responding to where the student’s own reasoning went wrong.

That is much closer to tutoring than answer generation.

Students do not all need the same amount of help

Of course, hints are not always enough.

A student who has never understood quadratic equations may need a proper explanation before a hint becomes useful. Another student may understand the concept perfectly and only need a reminder about one step.

This is why an AI tutor should not follow a rigid rule of “never give answers.”

A better approach is graduated support.

It might look like this:

Attempt → hint → retry → stronger hint → explanation → independent practice

The amount of help increases only when the learner needs it.

For example, the first response could be:

“Which concept from this chapter might apply here?”

If the student remains stuck:

“Think about the relationship between speed, distance and time.”

If that still does not help, the tutor can explain the relevant concept or demonstrate part of the method.

The objective is not to make students struggle unnecessarily. It is to avoid taking over a task they were capable of completing with a little support.

Good tutoring starts with what the student has already tried

There is another problem with immediately generating a solution: the AI learns very little about the student’s misunderstanding.

A wrong answer can have several causes.

The student may not understand the concept.

They may understand it, but have chosen the wrong formula.

They may have used the right method and made an arithmetic error.

Or they may simply have misread the question.

Giving all four students the same complete solution misses those differences.

A better interaction starts with the student’s attempt.

For example:

“Show me what you’ve tried so far.”

From there, an AI tutor can respond to the actual difficulty rather than restarting the lesson.

Hints can also reveal what a student really understands

Consider a student who gets a question wrong and then reads the complete solution.

At the end, they say:

“Oh, I get it.”

Maybe they do.

But recognizing a correct explanation is easier than producing the reasoning independently.

A hint creates a useful test.

If a small prompt allows the student to continue, their understanding may already be fairly strong.

If several hints still do not help, the problem may be deeper, and the student probably needs an explanation or a return to the underlying concept.

In this way, hints are not only teaching tools. They can also help identify how much support a learner actually needs.

The best moment comes after the explanation

Even a perfect explanation does not necessarily mean the concept has been learned.

There should be one more step:

Try again.

After helping a student through a difficult question, an AI tutor can give them another problem based on the same concept.

This time, the student attempts it with less help.

If they succeed, the original interaction has done something useful.

If they struggle in the same place again, that is valuable information too. The tutor can return to the underlying misconception rather than assuming the first explanation solved it.

A simple learning loop emerges:

Attempt → get a hint → retry → understand → try again independently

The final step is what separates “I understood the solution” from “I can use the idea myself.”

Students can change how they ask AI for help too

The responsibility does not sit entirely with AI products.

Students can improve the quality of AI-assisted learning simply by changing their prompts.

Instead of:

“Solve this.”

Try:

“Give me one hint without giving away the answer.”

Instead of:

“What’s the correct answer?”

Try:

“Here is my attempt. Tell me where my reasoning first goes wrong.”

Instead of:

“Explain the whole problem.”

Try:

“I understand everything until this step. Explain why this happens.”

And after receiving help:

“Give me another question using the same concept so I can check whether I understood it.”

These prompts turn AI from an answer engine into something closer to a learning partner.

There is still a time for complete answers

Hints should not become another rigid educational rule.

Sometimes students genuinely need to see a worked example.

Sometimes they have tried several approaches and are still lost. Sometimes the underlying concept itself is unclear. In those situations, a full explanation can be exactly the right intervention.

The important question is when the answer appears.

If a student has made a reasonable attempt, received appropriate guidance and still cannot move forward, showing and explaining a solution can help.

But immediately providing the finished answer to every question removes the opportunity to discover what the learner could have done independently.

A good tutor—human or AI—needs to know the difference.

AI tutors should aim to make themselves less necessary

There is an obvious way to measure an AI tutor: how many questions it answers.

For education, there may be a better measure.

After using the tutor, can the student solve a similar problem with less help?

That changes the goal.

The best AI tutor is not necessarily the one that produces the most detailed solution or responds fastest. It is the one that knows when to explain, when to question, when to hint, and when to let the student keep thinking.

Because ultimately, the student will encounter the next question without knowing exactly what it will ask.

If one carefully chosen hint today makes them more capable of solving that question independently tomorrow, the AI has done something more valuable than simply providing an answer.
