Should a child choose the private tutor?

Tutors International’s view is that it should always be family’s decision!

Tutoring agency, Tutors International, today has published an article that looks at who should be involved in the recruitment process for a private tutor, and what they should look for in the ideal candidate.

“You need a private tutor that has the correct educational qualifications, the best match socially and can stimulate the student in the right way for the individual to realise his or her full potential.”

Nearly all homeschool tutoring candidates might look excellent on paper, when reading their CV, having exemplary qualifications and vast experience, so sifting through the list needs to invoke other criteria.
Adam Caller, IECA Member and founder of private tutoring agency, Tutors International, published an article that questions the involvement that the students should have in recruiting their homeschool tutor, by giving an advice what they should be looking for.

Involving children in the search for their private tutor may remind the parents of The Perfect Nanny letter from Mary Poppins,

“…You must be kind, you must be witty
Very sweet and fairly pretty
Take us on outings, give us treats
Sing songs bring sweets…”
and lead to unreasonable demands for a rosy-cheeked, feeble-minded governess, instead of the firm hand, that parents feel are needed to coax their children to learn.

Mr Caller, who has personally overseen the successful placement of countless private tutors worldwide, upon founding Tutors International in 1999, believes that hiring a full-time private tutor is a serious investment in your child’s education. In order to be a fruitful and happy placement, the chosen candidate needs to be welcomed by everyone involved.

“Children want to learn, they want to enjoy learning and they want to feel that they have a safe, supportive environment in which to learn,” says Mr Caller. “In all of our job adverts, we state, in their own words, what the children are looking for in their private tutor. It’s very important to us to hear their criteria – and it’s usually very insightful and valid criteria.”

Full-time private tutors that live close to the family, and those that live on-site or travel with a family, spend a lot of time together. With the over several years in some cases, with that family, they become more than a member of the household staff: often they become friends, they need to be a mentor, and assistant, teach new skills to the children, desirably have knowledge of a musical instrument or another language. This is why it is vital that every member of the household meets and ‘interviews’ the final candidates, even at several extended meetings.

“You need a private tutor that has the correct educational qualifications, the best match socially and can stimulate the student in the right way for the individual to realize his or her full potential,” emphasizes Mr Caller. “Only by involving every member of the family in the recruitment process can you ensure you find the right candidate in each of these areas.”
