Why would one like to be a registered nurse?

The registered nurses practice independently and interdependently assuming the responsibilities and accountability of their own actions and delegation of care to other registered nurses and health care workers. The work allocation depends on education and training of the enrolled nurses and the context of care.

Registered nurses provide evidenced nursing care to individual of all age and cultural groups. They promote and maintain health and prevent illness for people with physical and mental diseases. They plan, assess, implement and evaluate nursing care in collaboration with people and multidisciplinary health care team to achieve their goals and health outcomes. As the nurses recognise that spiritual values, ethnicity, age, sexuality, cultural gender, economic and social factors play an important role on an individual’s response to and belief about improved health and illness and therefore can modify their nursing care plan accordingly.

The core responsibilities if registered nurses include the following tasks:

• Providing technical and physical nursing care and support to the patients;
• Monitor, assess and making report and document about patient’s conditions and responses to treatment;
• Assisting in rehabilitation of the patients;
• Providing psychological and emotional support and information to patients and their families;
• Monitoring and adjusting medical equipment use while treating patients. It can be highly complex and technical;
• Preparing patients for minor and major surgery and offer post-operative care such as nutritional management and wound dressing;
• Assisting in routine medical examination, maintaining sickness and accident records, making provision for first aid and providing advice on health matters;
• Contributing to the clinical training of other nurses;
• Supervising the enrolled nurses and other healthcare staffs;
• Providing information and answer queries of patients and families about health promotion and treatment;
• Ensuring that all patients receive the right treatment as prescribed by the physicians and other health professionals
• Support healthcare students to meet their learning objectives in collaboration with other members of the health care team;
• Contributing to orientation and ongoing education program;
• Using reflective practice to identify personal needs and accordingly seek appropriate support;
• Sharing knowledge and experience related to professional issues with other colleagues;
• Performing actions in manner consistent with pertinent nursing principles;
• Using resources efficiently and effectively for providing care;
• Performing every nursing procedures confidently and safely;
• Maintaining clean and safe working environment by complying with rules and regulations;
• Utilising multidisciplinary team strategies to resolve patient’s problems;
• Maintaining nursing supplies record through checking stock in order to determine inventory level, forestalling the needed supplies, placing and advancing orders for supplies, validating receipts of supplies and using equipment and supplies as required to achieve job results;
• Maintaining patient’s confidence by keeping their information confidential;
• Attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications and participating in professional societies;
• Contributing to team efforts.
