Things that will prepare you for college life

Going off to college may look as the most exciting chapter of your life.

New friends, new city, and the completely new experience you will remember for the rest of life is all the college is about. Well, almost. College is not just about studying, partying, and exams – you have to prepare yourself for a life full of new responsibilities that you will have to do on your own.

College rules

Every college is unique when it comes to the things you can bring along with you in your dorm. You do not want to end up with a microwave that you are not allowed to bring into your room. You would not believe what items can get to a banned list. Even halogen lamps and power strips can be prohibited by your university. Therefore, before you move in, check the list of approved and prohibited stuff, or simply ask some of the students that are already attending the university. They will know best.

The closet space

Do not underestimate the clothes storage space, because you will end up with wardrobe you have nowhere to put. The necessities are the only thing you actually need. Therefore, ask around before you move in, whether the college facility is inexpensive and easy as most of them are. We live in a modern day, and a high-tech laundry service can text you once your laundry is washed and dried.

The room mate

People you make friends with at college usually stay your friends for the rest of your life. However, that does not have to be the case with a room mate you end up at first semester in college. Even though in most cases you would be best friends, it can be uncomfortable if you end up not liking each other that much. If you do not manage to work through your differences, you can always try to look for a different type of student accommodation. However, considering there will be plenty activities you will be involved in during your academic career, chances are you will not even have to be in the same room, unless when you are both asleep.

Look for the good food place

There is nothing like experiencing the campus food. Various dining options are included in many colleges, so try all of them out in the first semester. The college’s website is the great place for finding vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free food, alongside some of the best restaurant that have food of various cuisines. College towns are usually the places of the best food choices, and delicious meals, so make sure you go outside the campus and research more.

Dirty dishes nightmare

You know how you have always left the dirty dishes for your mom to wash. Well, this will not be the case anymore. Make sure you wash every dirty plate, glass, utensil or anything that needs to be washed right away. The bigger the pile, the more work there will be for you. You do not want to end up with a sink full of dishes that is the best place for annoying cockroaches to appear.

Do not procrastinate

If you have been a procrastinator back in high school, you will have to leave the bad habit, as soon as possible. The term papers, mid-term exams and final exams are closer than you think, and the sooner you start to study the easier it will be for you to pass all of the exams. Do not play the episode of your favourite show in the background while you are doing your homework, because you will end up watching the show instead of writing the task. Avoid You Tube videos before starting to write a seminar paper, because it will only turn into watching make-up tutorials, the newest video of your favourite singer, or the behind the scenes video of your favourite movie. Things will not get done that way.

These are some of my golden rules of freshman year in college.

The rest of them you can certainly be found on your own, once you start going to college. Everyone’s college experience is different and unique, so make sure you have the best one.

Follow these suggestions, and I hope that your college life can be less complicated, more fun and full of great memories.
